About

The Rare Groove Orchestra: groovy shit for the masses
Hammond funk band The Rare Groove Orchestra (RGO) was founded in The Hague (The Netherlands) in 2003.

Funk, soul and soul jazz are the main ingredients in this hot stew. Heavy doses of drums, deep bass grooves, gritty guitar hooks and grinding Hammond organ spice up the groove. Although the RGO doesn’t focus on the rare groove genre as such, the groove of the band is quite rare.

The band has toured extensively and has performed successfully at EuroJazz Mexico, Saint-Paul Soul Jazz - Hammond Funk and Raw Soul festival (France), Zug Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Jazz in Duketown, The Hague Jazz (NL) and various other venues and festivals world-wide.

In October 2007 the RGO released its first full scale album, simply called ‘The Rare Groove Orchestra’. The album received raving reviews world-wide. The much anticipated successor ‘The Man With the Dirty Finger’, recorded in 2008, was released early 2009.

Original member Felix Faassen (Hammond organ) left the band in 2009 to pursue other interests. He was first replaced by Rob Geboers (a.o. Soul Snatchers, AIFF) and followed by Govert van der Kolm (Organiced Crime, Soul Snatchers).

The Rare Groove Orchestra line-up:
Govert van der Kolm: Hammond organ
Luca Giordano: guitar & master of ceremonies
Ivar Zantinge: Fender bass
Dick de Zwart: drums

Discography:
EP 2 Cents (2004)
EP RGO (2006)
CD The Rare Groove Orchestra (2007)
CD The Man With the Dirty Finger (2008)

Praise for the RGO Album

  • Timothy Edwards, 2011: “On a scale from 1 to funky: extremely funky! This 14 tunes masterpiece is a must have for all you crazy jazzjunks and wacked groove diggers”.
  • BBC Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show, 2009: “These are seriously heavy tunes!”
  • Hammondbeat, 2007: “Soul-Jazz-Funk-Boogaloo-Groove: the 5 elements of the Hammond-odic table…The Rare Groove Orchestra (rgofunk.com) manage to squeeze all of this on paper, setting aural expectations high, high, high. Only 32 minutes to break your resolve, they beautifully overstuff the disc with that old-school production that the cool kids demand. [...] …a very big “little” record.”
  • KindaMuzik, 2007: “From the first to the last tone, your adrenaline level will be maximized by tight beats, fuzzy licks and the fat sound of Hammond. [...] One of the best remedies against dark and depressing winter nights.”
  • File Under, 2007: “A splashing groove-funk formation… [...]…screaming tracks, played with great balance. Felix Faassen knows how to bring the house down with his screaming Hammond.”
  • Charlie Bethel (Captain’s Crate), 2007: “The music sounds great! Raw & funky goodness.”
  • MusicFromNL, 2007: We were captivated by by the fat, juicy James Brown groove from the get-go. The fat Fender bass sound, the tight rhythms, the fast and funky guitar and the swirling Hammond sound bring us back to the heydays of The Meters. One thing is sure: you just have to dance to this music!”
  • Rundfunk, 2007: “The RGO has reinvented itself into a fierce funk band. [...]. With this album they have proven to be funkin’ with the best of them.”
  • PlayPaper, 2007: “Screaming guitars, sweaty drums and that great Hammond sound. [...] Raw and pure funk, the kind of stuff we would like to hear much more the coming years.
  • Funk-a-Flex, 2007: Raw, as we like it. [...] Great funk, with some room for boogaloo and stompin’ R&B.”

Praise for the RGO

  • Ongekendtalent.nl, Talent Of The Week, 2006: RGO plays honest and direct. [...] Very contagious and dancable funk music.”
  • VPRO 3VOOR12, The Hague, 2005: “RGO aims for the happy people.”
  • Stork on Air Magazine, 2005: “Keep an eye on the quartet that is named ‘Rare Groove Orchestra’. Those cats have a promising future.”

Rehearsing / Recording

Hi all! We just want to give you a quick update. We are currently working on a new album in our brand new studio in Rotterdam. We have purchased the necessary equipment and have built a solid sound proof studio in the vaults of and old office building in Rotterdam. We have been writing our asses off and are currently rehearsing the new material. Since we will be recording live (as always), we need to sound solid. This requires quite some practice.

We are planning to release the album (which does not have a title yet) in the second quarter of 2007. We are also currently planning a tour and preparing a show, which will follow the release.

Thanks for holding out. We are quite sure our new material and show is worth the wait.

RGO Kofy Brown Tour Report

Wednesday, August 27, 2006, six o’clock in the morning, we are rough and ready. This is early, even for our standards. Granted, we are not the hardened “party till’dawn – rock&roll style touranimals” you would expect at first glance, . Still, this was early! The prospect of getting on the road with Kofy Brown, however, motivated us all greatly. At this point all the rehearsing and planning was going to pay off. We were off to Switzerland!

How it all started
We met Kofy Brown at a gig about a year and a half earlier in our hometown, The Hague. Playing the small room at the Paard van Troje every last Friday of the month, we found out she played the large room with her US band on one the same date we were playing. With her being a recording soul artist (with the coolest artist name possible, we must add) we gathered up our nerve and wrote her an email, asking her to jump up on stage with us for a few tunes. She replied that she would and for sure she did enter the stage during the end of our last set. By the end of that night, both Kofy and us were impressed with what had happened on stage that faithful night and were hungry for more.

A few months prior to our six o’clock wake up call, Kofy contacted us. Our soul star friend had planned a few gigs in Switzerland, and she remembered those cats in The Hague. This time she was the one writing us an email, asking us if we wanted to be her backing band. Obviously we were honoured and jumped at the chance of doing an ‘international’ tour. Yeeha, we’s gonna tour now!! Months of intense rehearsals (without Kofy) followed.

As the miles flew past us on the German tarmac on our way towards Basel, we were still enjoying the buzz from a gig in Delft we did with Kofy a few days earlier on Saturday, August the 19th. We were booked for the Delft Jazz Festival just a few days before the gigs in Switzerland and we proposed bringing Kofy along. We swiftly came to an agreement with the festival organisation and had ourselves a third gig in Delft (which is near The Hague). The tour was now officially… multinational!

We started the gig in Delft with a set of RGO classics. After our own set, we quickly changed outfits, completely focussed and walked out on stage to play Kofy’s tunes with her for the first time. Unrehearsed, the five of us did a great gig. The public loved it, the Delft Jazz festival loved it, Kofy loved it, we loved it and we knew that the Switzerland gigs were going to be all right!

No rock tour is without at least a few jinxes. Our little three-day hike seemed to have its humble share as well. The first gig in Basel was plagued by an ill guitar player (we mention no names, as we respect privacy) and the fact that our gig was the first gig of the season at that particular club, meaning the place was not as packed as it could have been. Still, (with some aspirin) we did a fairly good gig and got a good response. However, we all felt Delft was better and knew we had something to proof on the last gig of our tour.

We got a good night’s rest at the hostel (which, by the way, had the slowest check in employee west of the Wolga) and went on our way the next morning. Nothing could have prepared us for what we witnessed in in the beautiful town of Zug. We were one of the headliners of the Zug Jazz Night and Zuggians were hungry for a funk-soul-rock party. I do not think any of us had ever played for such a large (and enthusiastic) crowd. We pulled out all the stops (and rock-clichés) and played our asses of as we never did before. There was real chemistry going on and the public felt it and acted upon it and so did we.

Overwhelmed with the success of the performance and the click with the audience we slipped into our comfortable Swiss hotel beds. After a solid breakfast, we went on our way back to The Hague the next morning. After a full day of driving (I swear, Germany seemed to be twice the size it had on the way over to Switzerland) we arrived home safely and with that our little rock & roll adventure was over.

We had a great time and a perfect musical experience! We enjoyed it very much and would like to thank Kofy again for this opportunity and experience.

Luca’s Mexico tour report

And so we were off! Away on our Mexican adventure.

Although we had no idea on what to expect we knew that this was going to be the experience that would come closer to anything resembling the classic world-tour feel then anything we had done before and we were excited!

The first few days were spent in true holiday fashion. We scoured around this huge town not expecting to get but a small taste of the this incomprehensibly vast metropolis. It is a place booming with culture in every thinkable way.

So we wanted to see some of the sights;

The famous Museo de Anthropologia and the beautiful district of Coyacan. The Centro Historico and the charming craft markets. We saw the pyramids of Teotihuacán which were truly breathtaking.

We enjoyed lunches and dinners in authentic Mexican eating establishments as well as the more touristy restaurants. There is a real eating culture in this city. From sun up to sun down everywhere you look there are little makeshift stands that will sell you foods and Beverages of any kind. Some are inviting and some are challenging.

We found we experienced a real part of Mexican culture. Not the safe version you’d see in the touristy bathing resorts. And even if that real culture experience might bring some ugliness with it (it is a extremely large city and it is not all of it is pretty), we considered it an experience grateful having.

By Wednesday we had to come down to reality and realise what we came here to do! Play Hammond funk music for the people of Mexico City.

We did a total of four gigs that week. Two at a club called Zinco (www.zincojazz.com) One In the city of Toluca (www.tolucatravel.com) and we were booked as the closing act of the Eurojazz festival at the Cenart (www.cenart.gob.mx) in Mexico City.

We played Zinco on Wednesday and on Saturday evening. There was quite a steep cover charge so I’m assuming we were playing for the more wealthy members of the Mexican society. We had a blast. At the end of the week the place felt like a small piece of home and the audiences were great. Mexicans like to have a party and they will show it when opportunity knocks. Girls danced, the band danced and shouts were all over the place.

Our concert in Toluca was simply amazing! We played the philharmonic concert hall “Sala de Conciertos Felipe de Villanueva”. It had a real sixties vibe going on. We designed the stage with different height levels to enhance this vintage feeling and together with the affluent bright white light (there were no resources left within the organisation to get fancy lighting up in the hall) this worked really well.

Tomás (as everybody knows, or should know…the best producer in the whole of Mexico!) showed us around this town a bit before the sound checks and treated us to a great authentic Arrachera lunch. Very tasty!

When we started playing we realised that 500 Mexican party people had come to have a great time. This they did! And so did we.

We couldn’t believe the response we got. These are open minded music lovers who do not frown on something because it is not exactly the same “hip thing” they are used to hearing.

The crowd gave us e real warm en enthusiastic vibe during and after the gig and chanted the bands name for two more encores.

These people like a funky tune when they hear it and exhibit no restraint in showing you that they’re having a blast.

Our last concert at the Eurojazz was truly a mind blowing experience! The other gigs were really great and Eurojazz was the quintessential cherry on top!

It was a beautiful and warm day (I even took my jacket off) and the ambiance was relaxed and festive. Like a huge village party. People brought foods and drinks. There were young people looking for a party, old people looking for a nice day out and everybody in between enjoying the day.
We played the Cenart courtyard for a total of seven and a half thousand people !

We never experienced a crowd of that magnitude and that enthusiasm and I can tell you… The energy that comes off of that many people cheering and dancing electrifies you completely. Especially when after a few tunes people started really having a good time, shacking their booties and complementing you on your act … and doing so screaming at the top of their lungs.

No doubt about it. This was a gig not to forget.

Afterwards the backstage area had to be secured on account of the enthusiasm of the spectators. We spent at least three quarters of an hours posing for pictures and signing autographs. Now there is something you don’t experience every day.

The equipment was top of the line as was the organisation. A great concert for great people !

The next day we tried get our senses around the super experiences we had, slowly started packing, had a last Mexican lunch and flew back home into the cold weather of the Netherlands.

Friends, It was a great experience. Playing the concerts, meeting the people, seeing the city, tasting the culture.

We would like to thank Janneke de Geus, Inez Schaap en Nico Vink, Tomás Pría Olavarrieta The staff and organisation at Zinco’s, the Sala de Conciertos Felipe de Villanueva In Toluca, the people at radio Mexicenze and the Cenart and Eurojazz in Mexico City, Noortje, Steffie and Danielle and of course Joost Noordman and Eric van Nieuwland for great sound and great pictures!

But most of all…. The warm people of Mexico City and Toluca who came to see our show, had a great time and made us feel so welcome!

Thank you ever so much !

Delft gig review

Cool review (in Dutch) by Rundfunk DJ collective of our gig in Speakers, Delft. Amongst many compliments:

“A furious interpretation of Grant Green during his ‘Alive’ record.”

And what about:

“Jazzy funk, uptempo and raw, with a leading role for the Hammond.”

Some requests in the same review: no more ballads, more percussion. We hear ya, boys! Also, some new pics made by Erik van ‘t Hof on their website.

Arno, we love you too!

Arno Dreef, the recording & mixing engineer of our album, is saying really nice stuff about the new RGO album on his blog (Dutch). Amongst other things, he says we’re the BEST band he has EVER HEARD!

Ok, maybe he didn’t say that. But he did give us some very big compliments, like “really nice Hammond grooves with a garage edge” and us having a “balanced sound”. Stuff like that. Check out his blog!

Praise About the RGO Live Shows

  • Ghetto, Istanbul, Sahuran Batur, 2009:High quality funk, amazing stage show and very cool attitude..RGO is definitely an exceptional band. It is impossible not to be impressed by their energy on stage!”
  • Jade Yorks, Remco van der Ham en Marije Pluym, 3voor12 on The Hague Jazz ‘09:“We all know about The Hagues jazz talents, but just in case you missed it; The Rare Groove Orchestra helps reminding you of that fact. What a awesome band this is! Right from the first beats, the audience is hyped by a great mix of funk, soul and rythm&blues. Front man Luca Giordano along with the other band members can’t wipe the grins off their faces. This infects the audience and soon they all start dancing. The crowd grows bigger by the minute and soon the place is filled up completely. Next year on one of the main stages?”
  • Pieter van Engelen, Jazz In Duketown Festival, 2006: “Thanks to you guys, Jazz In Duketown was a great success. I heard nothing but praise about The RGO! Thank you so much for a great gig, see you guys next year!”
  • Host, The Hague Jazz, 2006: “The big surprise of The Hague Jazz and the future of Dutch jazz. [...] A sound so big, it can compete with the best American bands in this genre.”
  • VPRO 3VOOR12, The Hague, 2005: “RGO has set cafe De Zwarte Ruiter on fire during North Sea Heats The Hague!”
  • VPRO 3VOOR12, The Hague, 2005: “RGO funkateers play the house down at Stork on Air radio!”

Reviews, more Reviews

We are not the kind of band to emphasize our successes all the time, but our first album has been getting some damn good reviews, which we would like to share with you! Check the first batch of links & quotes on the Press Page, check the new (unfortunately just Dutch language) reviews online:

KindaMuzik review: “From the first to the last note, your adrenaline level will be maximized by tight beats, fuzzy licks and the fat sound of Hammond. [...] One of the best remedies against dark and depressing winter nights.”

File Under review: “A splashing groove-funk formation… [...]…screaming tracks, played with great balance. [...] Felix Faassen knows how to bring the house down with his screaming Hammond organ.”

Hammondbeat Review

Now, Hammondbeat is a site we have been admiring from the the get-go. So when they have got something to say, we tend to listen very carefully. Especially when it is about our new record. We couldn’t have been happier with their review:

“Soul-Jazz-Funk-Boogaloo-Groove: the 5 elements of the Hammond-odic table…The Rare Groove Orchestra (rgofunk.com) manage to squeeze all of this on paper, setting aural expectations high, high, high.  Only 32 minutes to break your resolve, they beautifully overstuff the disc with that old-school production that the cool kids demand. [...] …a very big “little” record.”

The RGO in the Mexican media

The RGO Soul, Funk & Hammond show is ready to go. Ready to take you along to the four corners of it’s funky realm. First stop was ‘t Kroegie In Hoorn on Friday the 7th and later this month, the RGO caravan boards and flies to Mexico to preach the gospel of Hammond Funk to the beautiful people of Mexico City. The “Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes” that organises our gig at Euro Jazz promotes our visit with the commercial shown below. They’re showing our mugs on the tube over there!

So if you was not so lucky to join the gigs in Mexico take a look at these pictures. Kudos to Eric van Nieuwland. Next week we will post some groovy YouTube clips and of course a Mexico tour report.

Praise About the RGO Live Shows

Erg leuk! Het podium geluid was wat ongedefinieerd maar goed te horen dat het in de zaal lekker klonk.

Mixing DONE!

Just a small update on our production efforts. The mixing of our album is a fact two minute things need to be done so we can create our master. The last work is also being completed on the artwork. The CD will be hitting iTunes this December. Fill your mind with funk, check this site and your ass will follow!

Felix Faassen leaves the RGO, Rob Geboers to take his place

After a phase of self reflection, Hammond-player and founding member Felix Faassen has decided to leave the Rare Groove Orchestra. Rob Geboers will take his seat.

Felix (aka Mr. Flixz, aka The Lion) has become infatuated with professional (deep sea) diving. After years of pursuing this as a recreational hobby on the side, he is now contemplating ways to turn this passion into a living. Felix has decided that he can’t combine these activities with the full on commitment that is required to play in The Rare Groove Orchestra. We feel very sad that Felix has come to this decision. We have come a long way since starting the RGO over six years ago and this would not have been possible without the special talents, personality and friendship of Felix. Nevertheless, we feel happy for Felix that he has found a way to live his passion to the fullest extent.

Hammond-player Rob Geboers will replace Felix taking effect immediately. Rob brings a formidable amount of experience to the RGO. He has toured extensively with some awe inspiring artists and we are happy to add our name to that list. With Rob, the RGO has found a Hammond-player that matches the RGO perfectly. He’s got the chops, he’s got the showmanship, he’s got the looks, he’s got it all! We are very happy that Rob has decided to join forces with us and we are looking into a bright and creative future for the Rare Groove Orchestra on stage and on record.

The band has toured extensively and has performed successfully at Eurojazz Mexico, Jazz in Duketown, Zug Jazz Festival, The Hague Jazz and various other venues and festivals world-wide.

In October 2007 the RGO released their first full scale album, simply called ‘The Rare Groove Orchestra’. The album received raving reviews world-wide.

The Rare Groove Orchestra line-up
Felix Faassen: Hammond organ
Luca Giordano: guitar & master of ceremonies
Ivar Zantinge: Fender bass
Dick de Zwart: drums

Discography
EP 2 Cents (2004)
EP RGO (2006)

And the show goes on

Since our last post, an incredible number of good things have happened to the RGO. Of course, our new Hammond king, Dr. Rob, made our show as good as it could ever be. The crowds love him and the past shows have all been great. But when Rob’s busy agenda takes him elsewhere, another incredible Hammond player takes his place: the OrganGrinder himself.  Yes, we have been lucky to also work with Govert vd Kolm on different occasions.
The Hague Jazz, Jazz-a-Palooza, North Sea Jazz, Saint Paul Soul Jazz Festval, and all the other gigs lifted our, and our audiences souls. Thanks for all the positiveness!!

Now we are getting ready for a new bookings season, with a number of shows coming up. Check out www.myspace.com/raregrooveorchestra for new dates and videos.

Giggin in Istanbul

What a blast! RGO was asked to come and play at The Ghetto, a fantastic club in Istanbul. We were booked for october 25th. The venue has an interior decoration which makes you wonder weather you’re in a super high tech club, or on a film set of Rome (the series). Ceilings that look like Michelangelo’s life work at the Vatican combined with laser beams and a super sound system.

Anyway, we had a great time. many thanks to Sahuran Batur. He writes:

High quality funk, amazing stage show and very cool attitude.. RGO is definitely an exceptional band. It is impossible not to be impressed by their energy on stage!”

 And we agree!!

The pic above is a not the RGO… It’s the New Cool Collective. They visited The Ghetto in 2008.

Praise for the RGO Album

  • BBC Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show, 2007: “These are seriously heavy tunes!”
Last Friday was party time in Supermarkt, The Hague

What a thrill to play in our hometown! This was a unique opportunity
for our friends and family to experience the RGO Soul Funk & Hammond
show live on stage. And, boy, did we party!!

Shout out to the staff of the venue ”Supermarkt“: Great job guys! No
kidding, it was well organised. A dressing room with Chesterfield
couch and cold drinks, a top notch sound technician and friendly bar
staff. A great place to gig!

Pics will be available soon! Stay tuned.

Praise About the RGO Live Shows

Jazz Night Amersfoort May 7th: a great little gig

May 10, 2010: Last Friday, the RGO played a mini gig in café Vyssotski, Amersfoort (NL). Although we only had half an hour, the crowd went wild and so did we.

The Organgrinder (www.myspace.com/theorgangrinder) on the Hammond experienced an exceptionally expressive evening, as you can see in the picture.

Until the next time..  see you at SJU on May 29th (Utrecht) or at Supernatural Festival on June 26th.

Mind-blowing performance of this blooming band.

    - ‘Are you feeling allright?’
    - ‘I sure was, guys.’

Would like to hear your music with a horn section.

No matter the season, the RGO grooves on

Last Saturday, the RGO plays at the Hilligersberg Jazz Fest in Rotterdam. The weather forecast was quite alarming, but that could not stop the quartet from treating the crowd with a hot stove of funky and soulful goodness.

Even when the rain started pouring down, the crowd kept on dancing and we ended up bringing people onto the stage, where it was warm and dry.

Thanks folks, and see you next time!

Also a shout out to Bobby Lobster; thanks for blogging about the gig!

RGO: Dancing With The Cows

Boy do we go places! Yesterday we were invited by the vicar of Zuiderwoude to perform on their yearly event Reflections

Performing our Soul Funk & Hammond show in the midst of a stable filled with people and calves was indeed spectacular.

Thanks everyone for joining us and a special shout out to the attending cows: may you produce funky dairy!

Till next year?

No matter the season, the RGO grooves on

Last Saturday, the RGO plays at the Hilligersberg Jazz Fest in Rotterdam. The weather forecast was quite alarming, but that could not stop the quartet from treating the crowd with a hot stove of funky and soulful goodness.
Even when the rain started pouring down, the crowd kept on dancing and we ended up bringing people onto the stage, where it was warm and dry.
Thanks folks, and see you next time!
Also a shout out to Bobby Lobster; thanks for blogging about the gig!
